2018 Inaugural APEN Short Story Writing Competition For Secondary Schools
Can you write a winning story in just 1,500 words or less? The yearly APEN Short Short writing Competition, Powered By OkadaBooks, offers you a chance to win N200,000+ in cash, be the face of Okadabooks, get published and make your school proud!
As before, the top 10 winning entries will be on display in the inaugural APEN/OkadaBooks short-story collection. Each school can send an unlimited number of entries, but one entry per student.

How to Participate
1. Write a short fiction story about your school experiencs (crime, mystery, romance and adventure related stories only) - do your best to be very creative.
Your entry should not be more than 1500 words. It should not be less than 900 words.
Run to Okadabooks.com and create an account, if you don't already have one.
Publish your story. (Please see this tutorial. At the end of your title add in bracket, the hashtag, #secondaryschoolelife. Eg. If the title of my entry is Manner From Above, when publishing, I'll write my title as 'Manner From Above (#secondaryschoolelife)'.
Invite your family, classmates, neighbors, teachers and even your enemies to vote for you, by downloading your story, reading it and and rating it.
1. If at the time of judging, an entry has more reviews and ratings than downloads, that entry will automatically be disqualified.
Any entry without the hashtag #secondaryschoolelife, will automatically be disqualified.
If an entry mistakenly has *secondaryschoolelife instead of #secondaryschoolelife, notice the difference? Well, that entry will be disqualified.
All corrections you want to make should be done before judging. In other words, while people are voting, you can still make corrections. At the end of voting, all corrections end too.
Do not restrict your entry to the app. That is, while publishing, do not tick the DRM option in your publishing dashboard. Entires restricted to the app will be disqualified.
Set the price of your entry at zero.
Applicants are entitled to only one entry.
Your entry must be original, in English, unpublished and unproduced, not accepted by any other publisher or producer at the time of submission. OkadaBooks retains one-time nonexclusive publication rights to the winning entries to be published in a OkadaBooks publication. Any piece posted online, anywhere, is considered published.
Entries that exceed the word count will be disqualified.
Your story may be fiction or real life experiences but written as a story.
At the top of your story, include your name, school, and class. Any entry without these details at the top of their story will be disqualified.
HOW WILL ENTRIES BE JUDGED?
1. Highest number of votes, via downloads (10%)
2. Highest rating (10%)
3. Judges will read and score
Grammar - 20%
Punctuations - 20%
Creativity - 20%
Cover Design - 20% total = (80%)
First prize - N100,000, Okadabooks award certificate and interview on Pelleura.
Second price - N50,000, Okadabooks award certificate, and interview on Pelleura.
Third Prize - N30,000, Okadabooks award certificate, and interview on Pelleura.
Fourth to Tenth place - 5000 each, Okadabooks award certificate and Feature on Pelleura.
Eleventh place through Twentieth - Okadabooks award certificate and feature on Pelleura.
1. Entry starts on the 1st of May 2018, and closes 12 midnight of May 20th, 2018.
Voting starts on the 21st of May 2018, and ends on 31st of May 2018. (Please note that all downloads/reviews/ratings that starts before the 21st of May will be set back to zero on the said date).
Judges will read all entires and score the best.
Winners will be announced on the 11th of June 2018.
